BUSU

Well it’s midterm time. It’s always surprising, and a little alarming, how fast this fun little week sneaks up on you. One day you’re trying to memorize your new class schedule, and the next you’re writing a test on a subject you were entirely unfamiliar with just a few weeks ago. We, at BUSU wish you “Good Luck” on all your midterms; and remember when they are done to check out all the great events happening on campus.

The Brandon University Students’ Union is excited to announce that once again we will be partnering with the Assiniboine Community College Students’ Association (ACCSA) on the Annual Halloween Food Drive. As part of this event, students from both BU and ACC are invited to trick-or-treat door to door for non-perishable food items that benefit each school’s food bank. Last year, volunteers from clubs, Residence, and other groups around BU brought in more than 6,500 lbs. of non-perishable food items for the food bank. This annual event is the primary way by which we keep the food bank stocked throughout the year. This competition is open to all campus clubs, collectives, and student organizations. This includes Residence councils, ISO, the Aboriginal Student Council, or even groups of interested students looking to fundraise. Anyone from the BU community is also welcome to participate.

BUSU is offering cash and other great prizes to the clubs that can bring in the greatest amounts of food to the food bank. The clubs that bring in the greatest per capita amounts of food (total weight of all food items divided by number of members participating) will receive cash prizes in the amounts of $300 (1st place), $200 (2nd), and $100 (3rd). Prizes will also be given away for Best Costume for Individual and Groups.

As always this year’s food drive will feature a competition between not only the BU and ACC campuses but also the student unions’ presidents as well. Come on out and help us beat ACC for the fifth year and keep the food bank’s shelves from going empty!

On Tuesday November 3rd, BUSU will be holding their fall AGM. This is a great opportunity for our membership to learn more about what each of our council members have been working on with their faculties or consistency groups. BUSU will also be discussing some of our goals we have set out for the remaining year. Stop by SUDS at 12:00pm, there will be free food. Remember every BUSU member has a vote…Make sure to come out and express your ideas!

And don’t forget about the upcoming Thursday November 5th Day of Action to Target Poverty. This year BUSU, along with the Canadian Federation of Students—MB and Make Poverty History Manitoba has teamed up to call upon the government to implement a plan for a Poverty-Free Manitoba. Poverty affects everyone. If you have questions or for more information please stop by the BUSU office. Let’s do our part and make poverty history!
