Sports

Beginning on Friday night at six, the women Bobcats played an incredible game in the opener. It was a fight to keep up with the constant lead put up by the Bison’s, which in the second period the Bobcats pulled up a 14 point lead. Unfortunately for our Bobcats this lead did not last long and the Bison’s pulled up with a lead leaving the Bobcats behind until a tie (48-48) was made with five minutes and forty seconds left on the clock. Unable to secure a lead and a victory, the women’s Bobcats lost with fifty-six points and the Bison’s winning with four points more at sixty.

But on a lighter note congratulations to the leading scorers of the night: Melanie Thompson (13 pts) and Rosemary Mills (12 pts). And if any cares to know, the Bison’s leading scorers for the night were Lauren Mortier (13) and Maria Pawlyshyn (12).

For Saturday night, the women’s Bobcats again lost to the Bison’s eighty-one to seventy-five. In the first half of the game, the Bobcats held a lead against the Bison’s. It was until the third period when the Bison’s begun their charge and managed a lead on the Bobcats. In a fight in the fourth period, the women’s Bobcats came close again but failed to win another home game. For the second night, the leading scorers for the Bobcats were Jayla Bousquet (24 pts) and Nicisha Johnson (22 pts). And once again the Bison’s leading scorers were: Kayla Klassen (21 pts) and Michele Hynes (14 pts).

As for the men’s Bobcats, the Halloween weekend games proved to be more of a success than the women’s basketball team. In the home opener the Bobcats lost to the University of Manitoba’s men’s Bison basketball team. Throughout the first three periods of the game the Bobcats and the Bison’s were neck and neck. Both teams struggling to gain a significant lead over the other. When the game ended, the Bobcats lost to the Bison’s 74-80.

From the defeat of the first night, the Bobcats came back into the gym Saturday night to face the victors of Friday night. Right away the Bobcats gained a 14 point lead in the first period. Between the first period and the fourth, the Bison’s and the Bobcats fought to win the game. When the fourth period came and went, the Bobcats managed a recovery from the loss of the previous night’s game. Winning with a score and a significant lead of 106-83. The lead players for this game were Dany Charlery (33 pts) and Terril Thomas (20) with nine assists from Tarik Tokar.

On the University of Manitoba side were Dan Purvis-Collins (20 pts) and Jonar Huertas (14 pts) with Eric Garcia led with four assists.

Congratulations to the men’s Bobcats in the great recovery from the loss in the opening game. The Bobcats, both men and women, will be hosted by the University of Saskatchewan’s Huskies on November 6th and 7th.

In other Bobcats news, the Bobcat Volleyball team will be opening their season next weekend on Friday, November 6th. The women’s game begins at 6 PM and immediately followed by the men’s at 8 PM. The Bobcat’s will be playing host to the Huskies from University of Saskatchewan. So come out and cheer on your Bobcats!
