The Musician's Dream
Over the past few months newly named Brandon band Take With Audio have been hard at work making a name for themselves in our local scene. Although their name may be new, make no mistake, these guys have playing together for a few years now.
Being led up to a loft downtown, I stumbled into any musician’s dream jam space: a couple thousand square feet of open space filled with thousands of dollars worth of equipment and practically all the jam time one could ask for. After getting acquainted in the common (i.e. smoke) room, the band played a handful of songs before going back to the smoke room for a very informal interview.
The collaboration began out of a sheer desire to just play music, something that has permeated their sound since their beginnings as a jam band in the basement of a party house. It was not until being asked to play at a band jam for cancer that Trevor, Nathan, Bernie, Kevin, and a member that has since departed to pursue other endeavours, began to earnestly play as a band. Then under the name The Knockout, the guys played shows across the prairies and were fairly well received. After loosing a member the group decided to take a new look at their music, dropping their covers and going with strictly original songs and original sound.
“We want a sound that isn’t entirely commercial, but one that people can identify with.” says Trevor, TWA’s vocalist. “When you look at bands like The Red Hot Chili Peppers, or Tool, or Led Zeppelin” adds the guitarist, Nathan “they have a sound that you can’t say, ‘oh, that’s from this decade or that era,’ it’s just all around good music that lasts. And that’s what we want.” The band changed its name to Take With Audio a few months ago and have had nothing but great response from the local scene and even garnered the attention of a Toronto producer after playing the WCMA’s.
“Every band we have talked to and hung out with” the band says, “all ask: what the hell are you doing in this town? Get to Toronto.” which is exactly what they have decided to do. Over the next year the band plans to use their time to perfect their sound and make their way out east to pursue their dream and break into the Canadian music scene. So if you see a poster or hear that they are playing somewhere around town, go check them out and support some local artists. They have a fun, fresh and funky sound and are really good guys.
