BUSU Holds Annual General Meeting

On Tuesday, January 27th, Brandon University Students’ Union (BUSU) held its Annual General meeting. The meeting which was hosted in SUDS offered up free pizza and a raffle for a Wii for those in attendance.

BUSU gave reports of its progress over the semester, highlighting its ISIC campaign, becoming the third University in Canada to ban the sale of bottled water on campus and on going talks to allow students to use food cards on campus at places other than BU’s cafeteria.

There was one motion served with notice prepared by the BUSU executive and council over the last academic year which proposed a new constitution to replace the original BUSU constitution and its governing by-laws.

The most noticeable difference between the two constitutions included the elimination of Vice President (VP) Finance, VP Academic and VP Activities to be replaced with VP External and VP Internal. When questioned as to the motivations for this change, President Stephen Montague responded that the council positions as they are now have some overlap and this would eliminate council members doubling up on job duties in the future.

The motion: Be it resolved that the constitution be approved as amended to take effect May 1st, 2010 was approved with one opposed vote and a handful of absentions from the crowd. No other motions were served at the meeting which lasted approximately one and half hours. Other items on the agenda included announcements of the upcoming student union election deadlines and dates as well as reports from the members of the BUSU Council.

The meeting was chaired by Jonny Sopotiuk, Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students.

For any interested parties, a copy of the old constitution is still available at www.busu.ca, and the new constitution was given out in the agenda at the meeting. The Quill will also be posting each version on its website, the day of publication. (www.thequill.ca)
