The LGBTTQ* Collective is holding their annual Fetish and Fantasy (commonly known as F&F) on Saturday, February 27th in SUDS. This year we are going with a 1930’s theme. Wait! The dirty 30’s?

Believe or not the 1930’s was not just a time of draught and job loss. It was also a time of revolution. The 1930’s is so often thought of as being a time of suppressing sexuality. Fact: Betty Boop which was created in 1927 came on to the big movie screen and made it big in the 1930’s. But like I said, it was a time of revolution. A time when normal people became the hero’s. Now, you have seen the movies. The ones with the gangsters. You have heard the word prohibition. The prohibition was a law created that made illegal to make, sell, or buy alcohol. Gangsters or mobsters in that time period went against this law and it was their primary source of income. They created the first ever underground bars commonly known as a Speak Easy. In such places people could loosen up, get drunk and have fun. But some people who went to them did not want others to know that they were there and so masks for hiding identity was common place. But more on that later.

In Canada, the first ever women senator was appointed in 1930. A huge step in the sexual revolution that seems to have been forgotten. Another impressive fact: the March On Ottawa. When people walked in to congress to demand that the labour camps be stopped. Wow! Such courage. Personally, I find that sexy.

Why do we have a Fetish and Fantasy Social? We all have our own reasons. It’s all about being yourself but dressing up in a way no one would expect. It’s about being open in regards to your own sexuality. It’s about having fun. For me, it’s all those things and more. For me, it’s about remembering the victories of the past because without them, we wouldn’t be having an F&F Social.

More details on the social: 9PM-2AM, our entertainment in a live band called JANKSTA. Come in costume and there will be prizes! $10 a ticket and tickets can be bought in advance or at the door.

Costume ideas: In the past we’ve had a person come as a dominatrix, a drag-queen, a cat. Costumes do not have to fit the theme. I would love it if someone showed up as a nose. For keeping in theme, remember masks were normal then, wacky is good. In the 1930’s men often wore suits with lose fitting pants and hats. Men when involved in sports would wear very short shorts. Women had a wide range of clothing. Yes, they wore dresses but they went from modestly sexy to some very risky minis. Feathers were also something commonly found.

But you do not have to show up in costume. You can just come have fun. For more information, you can find us on the 2nd floor of the KDC (just down the hall from The Quill) or on Facebook group name: BU LGBTTQ* Collective.
