Faces behind WUSC: Aden Nuno’s Story

My name is Aden Nuno. I am currently residing in Brandon Manitoba, Canada. In 1992, I fled with my family, escaping the life-threatening civil war that broke up and destroyed Somalia. I was only three at the time. We sought asylum in Kenya where we were allowed to live as refugees, thinking that this would be a short term settlement scheme until we got to go back to our homeland after reconciliation. The situation in Somalia did not improve, and as a result, we were forced to lead a refugee life in a small camp called Hagadera.

I went to school in the camp and successfully completed my high school education in 2006. School was a tough experience and life in general wasn’t pleasant. I always believed that hard work and patience pays and my tolerance was rewarded with a WUSC scholarship after I secured sponsorship at Brandon University. I was overwhelmed by the warm reception and support of Brandon University’s WUSC local committee. Transition and getting on with life in Canada was easy for me with the full support of the group. I was able to make friends easily too.

I am now going to Brandon University preparing my Bachelor of Science degree with the intention to pursue a career in the medical field as becoming a doctor has always been my dream since childhood.

Through WUSC, I have gained courage and hope that I can build the future of my own self and the nation’s future.

WUSC is making big changes in the world by giving education to very deserving refugee students. Sincerely,

Aden Sigat Brandon University Students’ Union Local 37 of Canadian Federation of Students.
