WUSC Brandon Nominated for $20,000 Grant
On February 23rd, the Brandon University WUSC (World University Service of Canada) Club received notification from the WUSC National Office that they would be nominated for the Paul Yuzyk Award for Multiculturalism for “Outstanding Achievement”.
The award is given to individuals or groups across Canada who have made exceptional contributions to multiculturalism and diversity.
The WUSC National Office is quoted as stating, “We think that the Brandon group has done great things in this regard, and think you would be a good recipient of the award”.
The recipient of this award receives a certificate of honor signed by the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism. The monetary component of the award, a grant of $20,000, is directed by the Multiculturalism Program to an eligible, registered, not-for-profit organization or association chosen by the award recipient.
The rating guidelines for the award are comprised of five categories: Promoting initiatives that support the objective of the Multiculturalism Program; Demonstrating support for the economic, social, and cultural integration of new Canadians and cultural communities; Facilitating programs such as mentorship, volunteerism, leadership, and civic education among at-risk cultural youth; Promoting inter-cultural understanding and Canadian values (democracy, freedom, human rights and rule of law) through community initiatives, with the objectives of addressing issues of cultural social exclusion (parallel communities) and radicalization; and Creating a positive impact of the efforts.
The BU WUSC Club was chosen from over eighty WUSC student organizations throughout Canada to be nominated for this award. Members of the BU Club are honoured simply by the fact that they have been chosen as nominees. “Imagine the difference we could make with that money”, exclaimed WUSC Co-Chair, Shannon Skidmore upon hearing of the wonderful news. Nominations are submitted to the government on March 1st, 2010.
