UFC 118
The highlights of UFC 118, Couture vs. Toney, proved what every real MMA fan has known since even the first UFC fight. Boxers are like specialists... they’re great at one thing, but they just straight up can’t deal with anything except for what they are good at. The win by Couture demonstrates the boxer Toney’s career has been irrevocably thrown into a tailspin that could halt his career for good.
Couture knew from his opponents bluster to avoid trading any punches on his feet and brought the fight to the floor where Toney had no answers for the grappling involved. Because of this, the fight didn’t even get past the first round with Toney barely getting a punch in while on his feet. Two chokeholds later the referee called the fight a mere 3:17 into the fight. The length of this match could have matched any beard growing contest between thirteen year olds with only the thirteen year olds and not the fans coming out on top.
In the Edgar fight Vs. Penn, a much more confident Edgar repeated his performance from earlier in the year, taking Penn down a notch or five. This was a much better display of fighting entertainment than the Couture and Toney matchup, lasting for a full 25 minutes before going to a decision. A lack of advice from Penn’s corner showed to be fairly important to the outcome with the silence only proving that Penn might not have been aware of what was going on. Edgar won because he controlled the fight, forcing reactions from Penn the entire way which apparently impressing everyone enough to give him the win. This beard growing contest actually had the length to match any prideful lumberjack, a result where everyone can be happy.
