A Sneak Peek @ The Evans

When the Evans theater got in touch with me last week to pre-screen the movie FOODLAND for their “made in Manitoba” weekend happening on January 7-9, I was skeptical to say the least. I fully expected it to mimic either your typical, poorly-made Canadian film attempting to tackle a “serious” problem, or some sappy coming-of-age/teen drama that has been done to death. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that FOODLAND was neither of these things.

FOODLAND is a caper comedy in the vein of SCTV or Kids In The Hall made by Adam Smoluk and shot in Winnipeg. It is the kind of comedy that only those of us born North of the 49th parallel would find funny. When a naive stock boy (James Clayton) and his dim-witted boss (Ross McMillan) botch an ill conceived attempt to steal fifty grand from the store’s safe, hilarity ensues as they in turn have that money stolen from them and hire a first time detective to help them retrieve the stolen, stolen money.

Like I said before, I actually thoroughly enjoyed this movie despite my preconceived notions of what it may have been, and I would recommend checking it out the first weekend back when classes resume.
