What is Career Trek?

By: Maria Garcia Manzano

Over the last decade Career Trek has been operating in Westman as the Wonder of Work Program. This organization is a not-for-profit registered charity dedicated to showing students aged 10-11 the importance of post-secondary education. Their program is available for a variety of schools across our Westman region and it entails providing school nominated students the opportunity to engage in career oriented educational settings. This program runs for five hours every Saturday from November-March. Students in Brandon are taken to either Brandon University or one of the ACC campuses. Every year in Brandon 180 students are picked from the schools and experience 40 different occupations and professions at one of the three locations. The children participate in hands-on education and by allowing kids to participate in this program, students are able to discover what they like and dislike.

Some of the career’s children get to experience in Brandon are:

Assiniboine Community College

  • Agriculture and Environment

  • Business Administration

  • Interactive Media Arts

  • Police Studies

  • Trades and Technology

  • Early Childhood Education

  • Educational Assistant

  • Personal Trainer

  • Brandon University

  • Anthropology

  • Biology

  • Education

  • Geography

  • Health Studies

  • Political Studies

  • Chemistry

There is a fee to be registered into the program however it is only $25.00, this fee includes all materials the children will use, their graduation diplomas plus transportation from and to the campuses. As for schools that are located in the Westman area but are too far to come to the campuses, the organizers provide individuals to visit these schools on the weekend and provide the same educational settings taking place at campuses from the comfort of their own school. Furthermore, throughout November-March four weekends are allocated so that family and friends are able to go with the students and help out and experience the educational settings the students are being exposed to.

As a BU student you may be wondering what career trek can provide to you. Since all the demonstrations and classes are taught by students from either ACC or BU, there is a job opportunity for University and College students across the different areas they offer. This job would be perfect on your resume if you are seeking to be employed in any sort of educational setting as it provides you with valuable work experience. Furthermore, the hours are perfect for a post-secondary student as it mainly requires the you to work over the weekends.
