Dear Glow Cloud: With the new year, I’ve made a resolution to be a better student and treat my body better – you know, less chips and more vegetables. Do you have any tips?
Read moreOp/Ed: New Year’s Resolutions
It’s that time of year when people are asking you “what is your New Year’s resolution?” and along with this question, businesses (especially those in the business of altering your appearance/intellect/hobbies) are cashing in on advertisements of a similar nature.

I am not sure if I believe in New Year’s resolutions. “Why make a promise that you can’t keep?” has always been my thought. However, I do believe it is important to work towards being a better student, as there is always room for improvement – especially in the citation department.

If you – like me – find that there is simply not enough time during the week to accomplish all of your academic goals, you have likely found yourself desperately and repeatedly swiping your ID card at a locked school door in a crude attempt at a muggle ‘Alohamora’. This was my lot on a cold Sunday in December as I tried to access the sacred halls of Brodie to perform analytical witchcraft – aka science.

This year, students will notice an additional Copyright Fee on their accounts. The new fee is $24 per full time student, and $15 per part time student. The Copyright Fee represents the cost of Brandon University signing an agreement with Access Copyright.

Broken condoms can certainly ruin a mood. That’s why it is super important to store and use them properly. If you store and use a condom right, it should not break. Here are a few things to remember:

During my interview with Professor William P. Gordon I realized two things. The first was that he is a very friendly man. The second was that his beard was better than mine by several orders of magnitude. It imbued serious authority.

Myth: sexual assault is an inconceivable act that only happens to young women that ask for it by leading guys on by flirting and dressing seductively, then reporting it to the police in order to get back at their boyfriends or to save their reputation.
Read moreThe Myth of Post-Feminism
Feminism: how often do we hear that word laced with negative connotations? Merriam-Webster defines feminism as “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes” and as “organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests”. What then creates such strong reactions to the word? It can be used to dismiss legitimate points made by women, whether related to gender or not.

Tuition, books, and living expenses add up fast, making the task of finding and securing employment during the academic year seem like an impossible challenge, especially when you have no idea where to start looking.

There are posters aplenty at BU which preach the possibilities inherent in a Bachelor of Arts. Professors urge you on to a Master’s Degree and your parents wonder what you can do with Philosophy. Journalism is frequently mentioned, or perhaps you can be an Art Advisor (whatever that is).

Succeeding in university is not a cakewalk, even for those that flew through high school with ease. It takes hard work and dedication to flourish at a high level. Living away from home for the first time can be a huge change, and professors aren’t going to be breathing down your throats to study or hand in assignments.

The university experience is a time of learning, not simply a structure for academia. Not only are questions proposed in the formal educational setting, but also the personal lives of all participants. Read moreWhat’s a “Building Fee”?
Like most students, September is a hard month for me. Getting back into a routine is not the only difficult part of September; September is also an incredibly expensive month. Tuition is due and the cost of textbooks adds up quickly. Of the over $4,000 I currently owe in tuition and fees, over $500 of that is in fees that students have voted to pay. Half this cost is the $250 health and dental plan (which you can opt out of if you have alternate coverage through a parent or spouse), and the rest is made up of BUSU and building fund fees, the U-Pass, the Quill Levy, CFS Fee, and WUSC fee.

For those of you who do not already know me, my name is Emily Diehl, and I am the Editor-in-Chief of The Quill. This is my second year in the position; previously, I held the position of Assistant Editor-in-Chief during the 2011-2012 school year.
