Scared for a Cause

Are you one of those sick people who love being scared? Seen every scary movie out there and think you’re brave? A Halloween fanatic? Love being so scared you pee your pants?

A quick drive outside Brandon will bring you to the haunting Grim Acres. Take Highway 1A (toward Kemnay), turning left onto Stanley Road and go four miles down the road, if you dare. It’s a free yearly attraction, with donations greatly appreciated, and honestly, it’s for a good cause and you’re kinda a dick of you don’t donate some monetary amount. There is also a canteen on site. According to their website, Grim Acres Scare Away Cancer runs from October 27-30, 6pm-11pm this year, and a no-scare hour held from 6pm-7pm. Scare Away Cancer recently made Narcity’s “13 Scariest Places to Go To In Manitoba For Halloween 2017” in their free section of the article. They note the brave souls who come out have the option to go into the haunted warehouse, or the actually abandoned house. There is no alcohol allowed at the haunt, and you will be told to leave if you bring it on site. Go sober, it’s scarier.

Amber and Brian Sutherland started Scare Away Cancer because cancer affected people in both of their lives. 100% of the proceeds from the yearly haunt to go the Canadian Cancer Society (so bring some cash to donate, don’t be a jerk). They rely on private and corporate donations for the materials for their haunt and money out of pocket to add to the attractions. They are also a covered attraction, which means you can get the shit scared out of you rain or shine.

This year they decided to run two more events. They held an attempt to break the current world record of 1580 people dressed up as superheroes in one place at one time, as well as a Bud N Spud Dinner. Both events were held October 1st at the Keystone centre. The World Record attempt was free, with donations greatly accepted and the Bun N Spud dinner was $20, or a support ticket for $15. All proceeds went to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Take a drive to Grim Acres this Halloween, if you dare. Take some friends you don’t think will judge you when you scream like a scared child and bring extra pants, you know, just in case.
