Onward Movie Review

By: Mallory Johnson

I recently watched the movie Onward on Disney+, and I enjoyed it! It is about “Two elven brothers embark on a quest to bring their father back for one day.” (Disney+). It stars Tom Holland (Spiderman: Homecoming, Spiderman: Far from Home), Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Endgame), Octavia Spencer (Ma, Dolittle), and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss (Downhill, Veep). Before I go any further, this review does contain spoilers, so SPOILER ALERT. The movie is creative, funny, cute and heartfelt. The theme of magic was interesting. I loved how the main characters had a small dragon as a pet. The surprise party in the movie was very cute. Onward felt like a classic Disney adventure movie, and I really liked it. The main character, Ian, is funny and relatable, and reminds me of Tom Holland’s Spider Man character (funny and awkward seems to be Tom’s typecast). I loved all the different kinds of monsters/characters. The aggressive fairy biker gang was funny - and where the title of the movie came in. I liked the music and the score for the movie added a lot to it. The scene where Ian was walking across his invisible bridge made me anxious. I liked how they had to follow giant statues of robins. I loved how Barley (Ian’s older brother) and Ian were floating on a giant cheesy. I found it cute how the dad was always looking for the kids by tapping his feet (because he didn’t have an upper half for most of the movie - I found it funny how the dad had a leash because he’s only legs.)  I love how Ian’s magic seemed to work at the perfect timing. I loved how the movie ended, and that Ian realized how much he needed and loved Barley. My overall rating is a solid 10/10.
