The Rhythm of Residence: The Newlywed Game

In the spirit of the upcoming Valentine’s Day, McMaster Floor Rep Jennifer Jermey, and McMaster R.A. Dakota Johnson are hosting an event, encouraging couples’ participation. I had a chance to ask Jermey some questions about what they have planned.

The Quill: What is the Newlywed Game?

Jennifer Jermey: The Newlywed Game is a Residence event for students and guests to have fun and meet other people. The Newlywed Game is based on the TV show, in which couples answer questions about themselves and try to match their answers to gain points.

TQ: Has this type of event been put on before?

JJ: This will be the third edition and year of the game put on by McMaster Hall. It was created by past R.A. Derek Booth, and Dakota hosted it the first year as a floor rep. If anyone has attended the past 2 it will be quite similar.

TQ: My understanding is that students who don’t sign up as a couple are welcome to come and watch. What advice do you have for prospective audience members?

JJ: Come out and join us, it will be low stress but a lot of fun. If you don’t know how the format works you may want to YouTube an episode of the original TV show. All the rules will be explained that night, and it’s more just come out and have fun.

TQ: If you had the chance to help sway the minds of a couple who weren’t sure about signing up, what would you tell them?

JJ: The questions are not all intrusive, it is more about having a laugh and maybe learning more about yourself and your partner. You can ignore a question if you don’t want to answer it and we are LGBT+ friendly! If you have only been dating a short while you can still be competitive.

TQ: Can you give any hint as to what the winners can look forward to?

JJ: Our Grand prize winners will win a free date which includes dinner and a movie. We will also have some prizes and gag gifts for our runners up. I’d start paying attention to what your partner’s favourite flower is, where they went to school, how many siblings they have, and what object of yours they’d really like to get rid of!

The Newlywed Game takes place on Feb. 15th, at 7:00pm in the Darrach Hall Lounge. There are Sign-up sheets posted on the entryway of each Residence, including information for contacting Jennifer if you have questions about the event.
